RNA Comparison with DNA - 2
Like DNA, which contains the most biologically active RNA, including mRNA, tRNA, rRNA, snRNAs and other non-coding RNA sequences that provide self-complementary parts of the RNA folding and couples with itself to form double helices. Structural analysis of these RNAs showed that they are highly structured. Unlike DNA, do their structures are not made of long double helix, but collections of short helices packed into structures similar to proteins. In this way, the RNA can achieve chemical catalysis, like enzymes. [2] For example, the determination of the structure of the ribosome, an enzyme that catalyzes peptide bond formation-revealed that its active site is composed entirely of RNA [3].
